Legislation Committee Ready to Conduct Inquiry On Government Bills

The Chairman of the Parliamentary Legislation Committee Hon Rodney Osioco announced on Tuesday, March 5, 2019 that the Committee is ready to do its work on the three bills that were referred to the Committee by the House in February 2019.

The three bills are; Bougainville Mining (Amendment) Bill 2019, Bougainville Advance Holdings Trust Authorisation Bill 2019 and Bougainville Advance Holdings Limited Authorisation Bill 2019.

In a letter addressed to the ABG President Chief Dr John Momis, the Speaker of the House the Hon Simon Pentanu informed the President that he will be reluctant to have the bills moved to the second reading stage until a report is tabled by the Committee.

Meanwhile, the Committee Chairman, Hon Rodney Osioco revealed in an interview that all preparatory work has been done and the Committee is ready to do its work depending on the availability of funds.

In response to the Speaker’s letter, President Momis has announced that the Bougainville Executive Council has agreed that adequate funding will be provided to the Legislation Committee to allow the report on the three bills to be ready to be furnished before the House meets this month.

Hon Osioco said the immediate business of the Committee in its next meeting will be to endorse its Terms of Reference, the public consultation programme and other correspondence such as invitations to the public for submissions.

He added that they will also invite submissions from the Mining Department, Finance Department and from Law and Justice Department.

The Committee will be holding consultations and public hearings beginning next week from Tuesday, March 12 to Thursday March 14 2019.

The Committee will be meeting with lawyer Kenneth Nanei on Tuesday before they begin consultations and public hearings with the general public, stakeholders and departments concerned.
